Brief Introduction

Ô-Môi is a support network for bisexual women, lesbians, female-to-male (FTM) transgenders, and questioning women who are of Vietnamese heritage. This includes immigrant to multi-generational Vietnamese, Chinese-Vietnamese, Amerasian Vietnamese, and other mixed-heritage Vietnamese. This is a volunteer support group to help Vietnamese women and transgenders to cope with their unique positions as sexual minorities, gender minorities and ethnic minorities in the U.S. We organize social events as a means for women to meet, make new friends and to exchange information and resources. Annually, we organize a camping trip with our sister organization up North, Rong Tien. We also organize sporadic local events such as potlucks, movie outings, and museum outings depending on the whims and schedules of members. Organizational History

Originally, we started out as a small group of individuals from Los Angeles and Orange Counties of Southern California in February 1995. Since then, we have grown and expanded via the internet with members from other states. We hope this new development of our site on the internet will provide a safe space for Vietnamese queers or those questioning to connect, share information and to start a virtual community of support.

How We Got Our Name

"What is Ô-Môi?" you may ask. "Ô-Môi" is a slang word in Viet Nam for lesbians. This term emerged as a slang for lesbians during the late 1960s to mid-1970s. Ô-Môi itself is a tropical tree found in Viet Nam. This tree has flowers and pods. "Naughty' school children in Viet Nam would eat the insides of the pods for fun because it doesn't really taste that good. It is how one consumes this fruit that the meaning lesbian seems fitting. Ô-Môi Mission Statement

Ô-Môi endeavors to support and advocate the rights and visibility of Vietnamese- lesbians, bisexual women and pre-operation female-to-male (FTM) transgenders.

Ô-Môi Membership Guidelines:

Ô-Môi is comprised of voting and non-voting members. Lesbians, bisexual women, and pre-operation FTM transgenders of Vietnamese descent are voting members and have the right to vote and partake in all Ô-Môi activities. All others are non-voting members who support Ô-Môi's mission. Non-voting members are welcome to Ô-Môi "open" events only. While the general meetings and social functions are open to all members, planning meetings are reserved for voting members only. Rap-group meetings are also closed to non-voting members unless otherwise indicated.

SØ Ký Cüa Ô-Môi

Hµi Ô-Môi thành l§p hòi Tháng 2, Nåm 1995. Hµi g¶m có ngß¶i Vi®t næ ð°ng tính, lßÞng tính, và hoán tính · Qu§n Cam và Los, miên Nam Cali. Bây gi¶i thì hµi g¶m có nhæng ngß¶i bÕn · ti¬u ban khác. Tøi này còn ðang làm vi®c ð¬ bö lên ðây 'link' ðªn nhæng bài báo cüa Ô-Môi. Xin ch¶ vì chßa xông.

Tên "Ô-Môi" Là Gì?

Ô-môi là tên lóng cho næ ð°ng tính Vi®t. T× này là ðßþc ph± biªn · Sài Gòn h°i cúi nåm 1960 ðªn 1975. Ô-môi là tên cüa mµt cay tìm · Vi®t Nam. Cay có hoa và trái. Cách ån trái ô-môi là lý do mà ngß¶i ta kêu cách sóng cüa næ ð°ng tính là ô-môi. Xin ch÷n "Biªt Thêm V« Trái Ô-Môi" ð¬ xêm hình và mô tä cüa trái ô-môi.

Chü Ð« cüa Ô-Môi:

Ô-Môi c¯ g¡ng üng-hµ, nâng ð· tinh th¥n, và bäo v® quy«n lþi cho các bÕn næ ð°ng tính, næ lßÞng tính, và các bÕn hoán tính (các bÕn trß¾c khi giäi ph¦u t× næ qua nam) ngß¶i Vi®t.

Ði«u Lu§t cüa Ô-Môi:

Nhæng thành viên cüa Ô-Môi là các bÕn: næ ð°ng tính ái, næ lßÞng tính ái và hoán tính (các bÕn trß¾c khi giäi ph¦u t× næ qua nam) ngß¶i Vi®t. Các thành viên này hßÞng quy«n bö phiªu trong các bu±i hþp và tham gia vào các sinh hoÕt cüa hµi. Ngoài nhæng thành viên cüa hµi ra, Ô-Môi hoan nghinh các thân hæu üng hµ Ô-Môi. Tuy nhiên các thân hæu cüa Ô-Môi không ðßþc hßÞng quy«n bö phiªu và tham dñ các bu±i hþp thäo lu§n v« kª hoÕch cüa chß½ng trình cho hµi (planning meeting) hay các bu±i nâng ð· tinh th¥n (rap group). Ð¯i v¾i các bu±i nâng ð· tinh th¥n s¨ tùy thuµc vào ð« tài; có nhæng ð« tài mÞ rµng cho thân hæu. Khi ðó hµi s¨ thông báo cho thân hæu biªt.
